ā€˜Journal Tribune’ features article on James Sulikowski’s NOAA grant research on scallops

The June 28-29, 2014 weekend edition of the Journal Tribune featured a front page article titled ā€œUNE to conduct scallop study,ā€ which discusses research being performed by James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, and his colleagues, through a $1.6 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

To collect data for the study, 12 UNE undergraduate and graduate marine sciences students will go on week-long excursions with fishermen over a two-year period.  The students will take scallops that normally would be discarded, simulate their normal living conditions, and record survival rates.

ā€œThe findings from this study will contribute to better management of this incredibly valuable resource and help invigorate the scallop fisher here in Maine,ā€ said Sulikowski.  In the article, he notes that the scallop industry is ā€œthe most important fishery on the East Coastā€ and that last year ā€œwas the biggest scallop yearā€ for Maine, with the industry valued at $5 million, the highest in 15 years.
