An article written by Meghan May, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical sciences in the Ā鶹ֱ²„ā€™s College of Osteopathic Medicine, was recently published in Microbe, a publication from the American Society for Microbiology.

The article, titled ā€œAnalyzing Evolvability To Anticipate New Pathogens,ā€ discusses why new diseases appear and whether scientists can predict what new diseases will come next. According to May, ā€œFiguring out what comes next depends on understanding what makes infectious agents change to become more successful at infecting hosts, transmitting between hosts, and avoiding a hostā€™s immune system.ā€
