Students in the Studio Concentration Seminar course (ART 395), taught by Stephen Burt, M.F.A., associate professor and chair in the Department of Creative and Fine Arts, will be exhibiting their work at Engine Gallery (128 Maine St., Biddeford) from April 29 through May 5, 2016. An opening reception will be held on April 29, 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibit, titled “Convergence,” is the culmination of a semester long research project in which each student developed a body of work that reflects his or her particular interests and abilities in the medium of his or her choice.

The nine students in the course represent a broad coalition of majors at UNE: Luke Criesher (Neuroscience, ’16), Kaylee Doyle (Educational Studies, ’16), Jeffrey Edgecomb (Medical Biology, ’17), Paige Farrell (Health, Wellness and Occupational Studies, ’16), Hailey Pollard (Psychology, ’16), Elizabeth Russ (Art and Design Media, ’16), Rebecca Sherrier (Psychology, ’19), Amy Curry (Athletic Training, ’16) and  Tara Comeau (Medical Biology, ’16)

According to Burt, the concentration seminar is a defining experience for visual arts students, exposing them to the demands and rewards of professional studio practice while developing a personal working knowledge of the creative process. There is an extensive written/research component to the course as well. Of his students, Burt noted, “I am proud of their diversity and efforts which are heartfelt and reflect both their skill and honesty.”

The Engine Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, from 1 to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
