UNE Physical Therapy injury prevention program featured in āMaine Voicesā column in āMaine Sunday Telegramā

An injury prevention program developed by Kirsten Buchanan, Ph.D., P.T., A.T.C., assistant clinical professor, and implemented by Ā鶹ֱ²„ Doctor of Physical Therapy students was the subject of a piece called āMaine Voices: Keeping young athletes in the game,ā in the Maine Sunday Telegram.
The piece was written by Michael Hagerty, director of coaching for the youth soccer program in Yarmouth as well as head coach of the Yarmouth High School boysā soccer program. Buchanan started the program in her hometown of Yarmouth in response to the alarming statistics about girls and women and ACL injuries. In the column, Hagerty explains the success he has seen in his athletes and encourages other coaches to implement similar programs.
āI am proud to say that we have not had any non-contact ACL injuries in the last three seasons,ā he stated. āWe coaches feel strongly that the overall health and well-being of our teams, especially coming into the playoffs, were the best they have been in our 20 years here. We attribute this directly to the injury prevention program and yoga, which both resulted in improved physical performance and increased overall wellness.ā
