Eric G. E. Zuelow, Ph.D.
Location
Eric G.E. Zuelow is a professor of environmental, European, and world history. He specializes in modern Britain and Ireland, with a particular emphasis on the histories of tourism and national identity.
Zuelow teaches a range of courses that include, among others: Environmental History of New England; Holocaust in History and Memory; Environmental History of the Ocean; Environmental History of the World parts I & II; Time Team New England (in collaboration with archaeologist Arthur Anderson); Oral History (in collaboration with archivist Cathleen Miller); Drink!: A History of Liquid Refreshment; Modern Tourism; and, Postwar. His courses frequently involve hands-on research in local archives, the collection of oral histories, archaeological excavations, and the production of podcasts and museum exhibits which allow students to share their work with the wider public.
The hands-on nature of these courses also generates opportunities to work with members of the Biddeford community and beyond. Recent classes yielded collaborations with local historians, interviews with descendants of prominent local families, collection of archival materials, and more. Zuelow is keen to expand upon these activities, connecting students with people beyond UNE who are passionate about the past.

Zuelow is author or editor of six books including: (Palgrave, 2015), the award-winning (Syracuse, 2009), T (Routledge, 2011), (Ulster Historical Foundation, 2013), (Routledge, 2007), and the (Oxford University Press, 2025). He has served as general editor of (Taylor and Francis/ Routledge) since 2011. Zuelow is also the (current and) founding editor of the book series, published by Cornell University Press.
Zuelow frequently discusses historical topics with global media outlets including: New York Times (USA), Washington Post (USA), Wall Street Journal (USA), Times of India (India), Sveriges Radio (Sweden), BBC Radio and BBC Television (UK), World Finance (UK), Sunday Morning Herald (Australia), Australian Broadcasting Company (Australia), and National Public Radio (USA) among others. He appears in the award-winning documentary Inside Prora (Germany) as well as in three seasons of BBC Scotland鈥檚 popular documentary series Grand Tours of Scotland. A lifelong cyclist and erstwhile racer, Zuelow was particularly excited to have had an opportunity to discuss the with former US Masters National Time Trial Champion Fred Thomas a few years ago.

Current research
I am currently working on a history of empire tourism during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition, I am also working away on a project about the changing nature of sociability and nostalgia in England since World War II through the lens of the public house.
