Michael Smith, MS, PA-C is the Associate Director of Clinical Education for the UNE Physician Assistant Program. In this role he teaches on multiple medical topics as well as instructing students on clinical and diagnostic skills. During the Clinical Phase of the PA Program, Michael works closely with the students to develop and improve their clinical skills. In addition, he also acts as a faculty advisor to numerous students.

He joined UNE in 2025 as an experienced PA educator having worked as the Associate Director of Clinical Education for the Boston University Physician Assistant Program from 2020-2024 and having begun his teaching career at MCPHS University in Boston in 2015. 

Prior to entering academia in 2015, Michael worked as a Physician Assistant specializing in orthopedic surgery in the southern New Hampshire area. Prior to becoming a PA, he was a paramedic proving emergency 911 coverage for several greater Boston communities. Coincidentally, Michael and the PA Program Director, Robert Hawkes, completed their paramedic training in the same class at Northeastern University in 1994.

Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. He earned his Master of Science Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the Northeastern University Bouve College of Health Sciences in Boston.

In his spare time, he enjoys playing ice hockey twice weekly as a goalie and enjoys traveling hiking, and kayaking with his wife Deborah who is an Emergency Medicine PA. They have 2 sons and are eagerly awaiting grandchildren.

2021-2022 Member

Intra-University group of PAs and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Worked to develop a curriculum for teaching PA students effective ways to discuss suicide with their patients and methods to effectively treat them.
